Behind the Lens:

Photographing Laura Inkster for Show Circuit

One of my favourite parts of working with Show Circuit magazine is getting the chance to step inside the lives of some of New Zealand’s most talented riders. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Laura Inkster for the Jun/Jul issue, and it was a shoot that reminded me why I love doing what I do.

Laura is the kind of rider who makes everything look effortless — whether she’s working horses at home or stepping into the ring at a major show. But behind the polished rounds is a rider who has poured years of hard work, patience, and determination into her craft. That mix of dedication and quiet confidence was exactly what I wanted to capture in her portraits.

We shot on location at her base, and I couldn’t have asked for better conditions. The light played beautifully across the arena, and Laura’s horses were absolute professionals in front of the camera. There’s something about photographing a rider with such a strong bond to her horses — it’s not just about the sport, but about the trust and partnership you can feel in every frame.

For me, it’s always about telling a story through images. With Laura, the story is one of focus and ambition, but also of balance — making time for family, friends, and the horses she adores. The end result was a set of images that felt both powerful and personal, perfectly fitting the profile piece you’ll find in Show Circuit.

I’m so grateful to have been invited to help share Laura’s journey, and I can’t wait to see where the next season takes her.
